Caveat

Village Health Volunteers (VHV) were the hallmark of primary healthcare in Thailand during the past four decades. Panyananthaphikkhu Chonprathan Medical Center (PCMC) initiates youth health volunteers called ‘Mor-Jew’ which means little doctors. This project trains the youth volunteers (age 9–14 years old) from the community to practice basic screening, triage procedure such as blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring, and educating them about common disease prevention as well as basic hygiene to take care of elderly in their family. ‘Mor-Jew’ has fundamental skills to help VHV who have a huge responsibility in the area. Working together, VHV and ‘Mor-Jew’ can serve as a bridge to the formal health system and actively contribute a preventive healthcare to people in their communities.

Impact

1. This project encourages ‘public mind’ among local younger volunteers which is effective because it mirrors what is already a cultural practice for younger people to take care of family members and community.
2. 400 youth volunteers can track the general well-being of the families with their ability. Working with 200 adult VHV, ‘Mor-Jew’ can support elderly with mobility challenges by assisting them, giving bath, or providing diet-appropriate meals. Serviceably, ‘Mor-Jew’ is also trained to be able to triage serious illness condition and impart the indication to adults.
