Caveat

Community-level health services are needed to meet most fundamental requirements to sustain the wellbeing of patients. Both physical and mental prevention are included in these services. Panyananthaphikkhu Chonprathan Medical Center (PCMC) is a primary care facility that serves 33,600 people per year. In the year 2022, 1.2 million people who live in Nonthaburi had reported mental health problems such as stress, depression, anxiety. The result of Thai research development health system showed that the psychiatric patient’s surveillance, screening and caring in community had helped people access to mental health services. In the past, there was no mental health screening for our 15,000 responsible people. With awareness of the problem, The family medicine department of PCMC has initiated a project to screen mental health patients at PCMC community health centers and refer patients to physician. Using the depression screening scale(2Q), depression assessment scale(9Q), and suicide assessment scale(8Q) and stress assessment form (5ST) developed by Department of Mental Health, we can diagnose mental health issues for patients living in a community within Nonthaburi province. This project can support working links between the community and the main hospital as well as reduce service access time for patients. The mental health surveillance can help improve capacity for disease detection and response.

Impact

1.The 6,223 cases (71 %) of our service cases who are aged 15 years or over were screened for mental health using the Depression Scale (2Q, 9Q, 8Q) and the Stress Scale (5ST) between July to September 2022.
2.There were 35 patients who had mental health problems. 21 patients (60%) who had major mental health problems were refer to a psychiatrist in the main hospital
3. Providing these services helps reduce barriers to accessing other mental health services for local people. Early detection of stress-related mental health problems and depression for patient can help prevent family violence problems, as well as save time and reduce cost for high risk patients to get the service.
